Featuring : Courier Mail QLD, 1 December 2004 pg 12 Test before driving THERE is no excuse to drink anddrive. We all know it is wrong and you should never gamble with that old query: ‘‘Am I over the limit?’’. Either err on the side of caution, or get yourself a small breathalyser unit like the AL5000 Breath Alcohol Tester, pictured. In the lead-up to Christmas celebrations and office parties, CARSguide is giving away five of the testers. For your chance to win, simply write your name and address on the back of an envelope and send to: CARSguide Breathalyser Promotion, Locked Bag 8893, GPO Brisbane 9003. Only time—not coffee, exercise, chewing gum or fresh air—will reduce the amount of alcohol in a person’s system. Queensland Transport advises motorists not to believe myths about short cuts to reducing blood alcohol concentration as no such thing exists. The only way to reduce this level after drinking is to wait. It takes about one hour for the liver to break down the alcohol in one standard drink. If you drink six to eight standard drinks in an hour, it will take five to seven hours before the concentration of alcohol in your blood and breath drops below .05 per cent. That means you could still be over the limit the next morning if you had a large number of drinks the night before. So, a breath tester is not only a handy item to have with you after you’ve had a couple of drinks, but also when you wake up the next morning. One standard drink, which has about 10 grams of alcohol, includes a pot of full strength beer (285ml), a glass of wine (100ml) or a nip of spirits or with a mixer (30ml). As a general rule to stay under the limit, men can have two standard drinks in the first hour and one every hour after that, while women can have one standard drink in the first hour and one every hour after that. However, the rules on standard drinks were shattered when the AL5000 tester recently was put through its paces. The tester showed that everyone is different, seemingly varying on their weight, age, sex, metabolism and fitness levels. The South Korean-made AL-5000 is claimed to be highly accurate and has a one-year warranty. Each time the unit is turned on, it automatically re-stabilises the alcohol sensor. This process takes about 21 seconds and is followed by two beeps indicating it is ready for use. You then blow strongly into the mouth-piece for at least three seconds. When you are testing, you can hear the beep sound for two seconds then two short beep means the sampling is over. The display window then either shows ‘‘FLU’’ for insufficient sample, or your alcohol reading. If you do not test within 20 seconds, it automatically turns off. Allow at least 20 minutes between your last drink and testing. While drink driving is deadly serious, it is quite entertaining to gauge your alcohol readings with a few friends— just make sure no one drives home
