Types of Drug Testing in the Workplace

Drug testing is becoming a popular tool to maintain workplace safety and eliminate risks. Despite its popularity, drug testing in the workplace remains to be a controversial topic. The debate about its efficiency in reducing workplace risks never ends. Questions whether it is a cost-effective measure to maintain workplace safety and eliminate risk remain.

Furthermore, there is stigma surrounding drug testing in the workplace. Employers can agree that it is part of a well-rounded approach to occupational health safety and employees’ well-being.

Drug testing is also an opportunity for the company to educate its employees on the harmful effects of illicit drug use. This may encourage change in employee behaviour. It’s a matter of knowing the different types of drug tests and selecting which one will work best for a company.drug testing in the workplace, drugsense-dso7-saliva-drug-testing-kit_1

The following are some of the most common types of drug testing in the workplace.

1. Saliva Test

Know as the least invasive type of drug test. It is gaining traction as the method of choice because of its ease of use and fast result. A Saliva Drug Test provides 99% accuracy on seven drug categories including MDMA and the parent THC in marijuana. Specialised kits such as DrugSense DSO7 tests for MDMA (ecstasy) and METH (Methamphetamine) separately. This kit allows medical professional or one’s self to administer the test.

2. Urine Test

The most common method available. UDT tests for the presence of substances called metabolites in the urine. drug testing type in the workplace, blood drug testing, blood drug testThese are substances produced during the digestion process. This being said, unlike other methods, UDT must wait until the drugs have been processed or have passed through the body. UDT is commonly used to detect drug traces within the past week.

3. Blood Test

The blood drug test is the most expensive and most invasive of all methods. However, it is also the most accurate. This method provides accurate drug presence in the blood at the time of collection. It doesn’t require digestion compared to UDT. Blood drug test shows the actual amount and type of drugs present during extraction. It is the most accurate of all the methods but the cost and complexity of its administration make employers rarely use it.
